Don’t you just love the feeling of being excited and motivated about something? You are full of ideas, energized and just happy. Being motivated is the driving force for us to reach the goals we desire. Motivation is the fuel inside us that keeps us going – even if we hit a slump.
During my life I have been motivated about something for many times. Now that I look back, I realize that this wonderful feeling has certain characteristics that are very common to everyone.
You are motivated over something when …
#1 You are not afraid to put the hours in
One of the best ways to recognize if you are serious about something is to see how you react to the amount of work you have to do in order to meet your goals.
I’m building my online business part-time and there is a lot of work to be done. For example, it took me many hours of work to release my free report and opt-in form to the public. However, I wasn’t afraid of the amount of work – I did it because I was excited and motivated over what I was doing!
There are still lots of things to do when it comes to building my online business, but I’m not afraid to put the hours in, because I enjoy what I do. Most importantly, I’m motivated to take action.
“You are not afraid to put the hours in
#2 You don’t mind missing your favorite TV show
When you are truly motivated to do something, some things that were important to you earlier are now replaced by the things that excite you the most.
For example, I used to watch television quite a lot. Although I still watch television, it is just a couple of hours per week (a fraction of the amount it was earlier). And I’m not afraid to skip my favorite TV show, if I see that I have more important things to do (like building my online business).
#3 You feel uncomfortable at times – yet don’t let the feeling stop you
Sometimes – even when being excited and motivated about something – you may feel uncomfortable. You have to do new things that stretch your comfort zone, but at the same time you have simply to do them in order to grow your business (and yourself too).
For example, shooting video content for my blog has been one of these comfort zone stretchers for me. I knew that I wanted to provide video content in addition to text one, but at the same time I was a bit nervous, because I had put myself in front of the camera.
However, that feeling was just temporary and I’m happy I did this! I have been able to provide new forms of content for my blog and at the same time I have one fear less. Getting in front of camera is now easier than it was in the beginning.
#4 You feel frustrated when you are not able to do something, even if you wanted to
I know that this example is especially true when it comes to my athletic activities. For example, sometimes I want to go to ride a bicycle, but it is raining too hard for that exercise.
The feeling is the same when you are building your online business. You are passionate about what you do but at the same time there is something overlapping with your schedule and you cannot work on your business.
Especially in that latter example, you just have to accept that there are situations like this coming at some point. I know that it is especially hard to do something else than building my online business, because I have limited amount of time at my disposal.
At the same time, if your long-time friend (that you haven’t seen for ages) is visiting your town, and he asks to meet up with you, that event goes first and business building comes second. You just have to set the priorities straight.
#5 You hire a coach
I’m a big fan of coaching. There are many benefits when it comes to coaching but for example the personal guidance on your online business strategy is one of them. You can’t get this kind of personal attention on training courses, which are meant for everyone.
Hiring a coach means that you are willing to spend some extra money to his/her services. Yet at the same time you a realizing that you can grow your business much faster and head to the right direction much easier, without any unnecessary sidesteps.
#6 You give up on something comfortable
Being excited and motivated over something can alter your behavior too. If you want to get the best results, you have to give up on something comfortable.
For example, I have given up on watching television and I want to spend that time on building my online business instead. However, if I watch it, I like to do it after I have quit working for the day.
#7 You are willing to change your habits
You may be motivated about something, but soon you may realize that you have to change your behaviors and habits to get better results.
This has happened to me on many areas. First, I wanted to change my nutrition to feel better and lose weight. This in turn helped me to become more energetic and productive.
Second, I wanted to wake up earlier, so that I could work on my blog before hitting the office. Since I have limited amount of time available, I want to get results every day – even if it means waking up at 05.30 AM during the weekdays.
“You are willing to change your habits
#8 You don’t let a setback stop you
Many people are excited to start doing something and then they encounter the first obstacle that comes on their way – and they quit. However, when you are excited and truly motivated over something, you don’t let setbacks stop you.
I hurt my leg last year when I was exercising and I had to stop working out for some time. I was very frustrated of that situation, but I still wouldn’t give up. Later my knee got better and I was able to exercise as usual.
I know that my injury would have been a great excuse to stop training completely. However, I didn’t do that since I was (and I still am) very passionate about my sports.
#9 You are unable to get any sleep
Have you ever lost some sleep because you are too excited over something? I know I have!
It happens especially when you are getting to bed. You brain is on over-drive, generating new ideas all the time. When you fall asleep, you are even dreaming about your thing you want to do. Also, you can’t wait that you wake up and start working again.
I try to keep my notes ready, whenever an idea pops up into my head. I know that getting sleep is impossible sleepy if there are ideas running in my head, so I want to capture every possible idea that comes into my mind before feeling sleepy.
Conclusion
Getting excited and motivated over something is definitely a great thing. It shows that you have found something in your life that you want to work for – no matter how hard you have to.
Currently, building my online business is the thing that keeps me going. I have lots of ideas that I want to implement and I’m motivated to work hard to make things happen. I’m taking inspired massive action because I’m serious and excited about my online business J
Actually, there were some additional points that came into my mind about being excited and motivated. Please check my video for some extra ideas on this topic:

Motivation is wonderful!
Just tonight I woke up 4 times with brilliant ideas for my business. I wrote them all down and started acting on them today
It was great, although I am kind of tired today.
Motivation comes from how clear our goals are. Clarifying and thinking about our goals really helpes this process and gets ideas flowing into your mind.

That’s great to hear! And even if you are now tired, it was worth acting on your ideas right away
Yes, if you know where you are headed, it is so much easier to work towards that goal.

I love the feeling of motivation, something that inspires me to wake up each day with hope and a huge smile on my face ( now, this sentence rhymes ); It’s like an itch you can’t resist. I had a real laugh reading item#2 – something hard to do when your best friend is your remote control..

Hi Shaleen,
Thanks for dropping by!
Being motivated about something is a wonderful thing.
Yes, even though I don’t watch TV that much nowadays, there is still a place for it. I just love watching great movies or documents every now and then.

Great post! I particularly love #3, as that’s the challenging one. I’ve recently shifted my business away from what I was losing passion on, and toward writing, and this article perfectly describes where I am. I can’t get off the computer because I’m so excited to work!

Great article, and yes I love being excited and motivated. I’ve actually woke up in the middle of the night and had to get up and put my ideas on paper, then wind up working on it the rest of the night.
Linda,
Thanks for stopping by
I agree. That is the only way to handle situation – putting ideas on paper as soon as possible.

Hi Timo,
Yes….. online business is addictive!!!!!
Personally, I am passionate about something for around 4 years and then I loose interest. Because of this habit, just when I start seeing results, I move on to something different.
My question is how can I stay motivated after 4 years?
Tim
Tim,
This is a great question.
I have also seen, that my motivation towards something may change after couple of years. Something that I found to be very interesting and compelling some years ago may not be that interesting to me anymore.
First, I have accepted that this is part of my life (Motivation and interests come and go). We have certain phases our lives – yet they are very important part of it.
Second, I feel that one part of keeping my passions alive for many years is the ability to set new exciting goals and making constant progress. I feel that this is the main driver for me to maintain my motivation.
Sometimes it is not easy and takes persistence, but it is part of the journey of our lives.
So, I would say that setting goals that truly resonate with you and making constant progress. That’s a good way to set long-lasting motivation.
Cheers,
Timo
