15 Bloggers Reveal: What Is the Most Important Mindset That an Online Entrepreneur Needs and Why

success mindetWhat is the single biggest factor that determines our success in online business? It is our mindsets.

Just recently I wrote about the eleven core mindsets every online entrepreneurs should have. However, I realized that those views I presented on my post were just my personal opinions.

That’s why I decided to do a crowd-sourcing post related to this topic. I sent mail to other bloggers who I follow and who are more experienced on their blogging journey than me. I wanted to know their opinion on this matter by asking the following question:

What is the most important mindset that an online entrepreneur needs and why?

15 bloggers replied to my mail and here are the answers:

Kiesha EasleyKiesha Easley

“The most important mindset:

An online entrepreneur must be willing to experiment and not be afraid to make mistakes.  The most successful entrepreneur will even be grateful for the lessons learned, understanding that the knowledge gained as a result, wouldn’t have been possible without those mistakes. When you persevere, rather than quit in the face of failure, that’s when you finally discover the real rewards.  Make a conscious choice to refuse to quit – no matter what.”

“ The most important mindset that an entrepreneur needs is a complex question.

I pondered the many aspects of ‘mindset’ for a while, (and quite enjoyed it to be honest!)

When I took the time to break it down,  I realized that an entrepreneurial “mindset” is made up of a combination of things: Strength, confidence, determination, ambition, focus, consistency… but when it comes down to ‘brass tacks’ I think the most important ‘fuel’ powering our mindset that encompasses all of these attributes is ‘will’.

A simple little four letter word :)

If you don’t have “will” it is doubtful you’d be “willing” or motivated enough to follow your ambitions to reach your goals, nor would you be willing to stay focused, drum up self confidence, or stay consistent.

A person who can muster ‘will’ forces themselves to build up an unbreakably strong mindset in order to strive ‘hell for leather’ no matter what.

Will is strength.  That’s why you hear people say “he had the ‘will’ to live”.  We as entrepreneurs must build the “will to succeed” despite anything else.

We don’t think about our own self will a lot. We think about other aspects of mindset, but never the pinnacle that drives the other cogs of our mission!

So, yes, I’m confident that I am satisfied with my answer to the question.

An entrepreneur needs strong self will to move forward with unstoppable determination.  They have to be willing to work hard, learn from challenges and perhaps even the odd failure, yet consistently maintain a strong self will to succeed…. Eventually… they ‘will’ :)

“Being an online entrepreneur is no different to being a more ‘traditional’ entrepreneur, with a brick and mortar business. Your mindset has to be one of huge potential and passion. Believing that anything is possible with hard work, dedication and perhaps a little luck!

Having this type of focus towards making things happen, day in, day out, can only lead to great things happening. Personally, I find it hard to think with any other outlook… one that is full to the brim of passion and positivity! Be positive, my friends.”

“I think the most important mindset that an online entrepreneur needs is a mindset of engagement and contribution; you’ve got to be out there, connecting with people, and supporting their growth, and you’ve got to do it before you expect them to do the same for you. Don’t try to shoot straight to the top – go step by step and engage the people who are at your stage of development – if and when you all work together, you will be able to pool your resources to bring ALL of you up to the next level. Keep on ratcheting up in this manner, and you’ll get really big, together!”

“I think that one of the most important mindsets for an entrepreneur is one of never overlooking the fact that you are dealing with people and that each deserves to be treated with a level of professionalism and respect. One of the key elements to success today is relationship building, based upon trust.

Yesteryear’s tactics and strategies of simply marketing at every turn without consideration for the potential client have run their course. Besides, it makes for a much more enjoyable experience for all parties involved when we focus on the relationship. In general, people don’t mind buying if you have a product or service they need, they just don’t want to be sold to. :-)

To succeed as an entrepreneur, online or offline, you need to spend time on the planning faze. You need to spend time before you start (or before you continue) to clarify your goals, to make a business plan, answer the questions “What is my goal with my business?” “How will we make money?” “How many customers/subscribers to we need?” “How will we reach our customers?” “What will we do to over deliver on all our promises?

If you have answered these questions you have a basis to start your business on.

Good luck.”

“The most important mindset I think an online entrepreneur should have is relentlessness. Also known as determination, persistence, and not ever giving up what truly matters. The reason is because you will go through tough times, and there will come a time when you’ll want to throw in the towel. In order to get through those times and emerge victorious, you have to be relentless.”

Caleb WojcikCaleb Wojcik

The most important mindset an online entrepreneur needs is to stay positive and confident. Working online is filled with ups and downs that can play with your emotions if you get to invested into comments, stats and failed ventures. Failure is feedback. Using the mistakes as a learning experience is the best way to continue growth online.

Pat FlynnPat Flynn

I think the most important thing for an online entrepreneur to realize is that failure is inevitable and that failure is good. We should always strive to do our best, but sometimes things just don’t work out the way we planned (often if doesn’t!) – and we should expect that. As long as you can learn from your mistakes and apply what you learned the next time around, you’ll always be making progress towards your goals. True failure is failing and not learning from your mistakes and experience.

I think the most important mindset an online entrepreneur can have is looking to truly help people. Whether it’s helping them find their purpose in life, learning a new language, or making money online, the real focus should be on helping others.

It’s important for 2 reasons:

  1. Because the Web has enough useless content already and what the world needs more of is people looking to make a difference.
  2. Because it’s a win-win. By focusing outward instead of being self centered, you not only can add value to peoples lives, but are much more likely to be successful.

“I spend many, many hours every day sitting in my chair with my computer. Taped on the wall directly across from my chair – so that I see it every time I look up – is a piece of paper I printed out with three bold and capitalized words on it: THE BIG PICTURE.

I think that keeping the big picture in mind is the most important mindset an online entrepreneur needs to have. “The big picture” means different things for different people. For me it means doing something I love (blogging) so that I can 1) enjoy my life, 2) provide for a family in the future, and 3) work from anywhere in the world. THAT is my big picture.

When you keep the big picture in mind, you’re going to do things differently. You’re going to provide the greatest amount of value that you can. You’re going to work much harder and be willing to put it long hours. And finally – and I think this is the most important one – you’re not going to quit when you get discouraged or when things get a little difficult.”

“I’m going to say ‘change’ most important mindset that an online entrepreneur needs.

The ability to embrace change is fundamental for anyone who runs their own business.

Working for ourselves involves engaging a number of stakeholders and suppliers, and working with customers every day either face to face or online.

This means that we are always going to be at the mercy of other people’s demands and changes.

Plus technology. It is changing all the time.
Business owners who fail to adapt and change find themselves being left behind, as competitors innovate and alter to anticipate shifts in their industry, and static businesses fall by the wayside.”

“There is no single trait of enterprenuer that is necessery for success. It requires a combination of good characteristics that will bring you the success you want so much. Group of really important traits is something that’s more suitable for this question. Passion alone will get you nowhere. You need to do a reallity check of your idea. And I think this is the crucial moment, where many enterprenuers fail, they don’t seem to realize that their idea is so way out of the picture, hence they are always residing in the “merry startup land” where someone elses money will generate more money for them. It’s complicated issue, but combination of good traits with a bit of luck, can get you a long way. And plus is it even considered luck, when you’re consistently doing it, or you are doomed to win once? Luckily in this game, we need to win only once! ”

Corbett BarrCorbett Barr

“An online entrepreneur needs the mindset of trying to consistently and uniquely solve a problem or address a need or desire among a group of people he or she understands well.”

Hector CuevasHector Cuevas

“I believe the most important mindset is patience. You can read about and apply all the tactics and strategies on the web, but if you don’t give them time to work, you’ll be lost. Building and audience that trusts you takes time, but the key is not to just wait; the key is to act while you wait.”

Conclusion

As you can see, there are many ways to define the most important mindset that an online entrepreneur needs.

I truly appreciate that these busy bloggers had a chance to answer to my question. Thank you all!

I will thoroughly enjoy getting to know everybody on a deeper level soon.

Thanks again Timo for allowing us all to share our opinions!

    There isn’t – all 15 are important.

  8. Timo: Really great looking blog! Well done, exploring the all- important mindset question. I think you and your readers would like Carol Dweck’s book, Mindset http://amzn.to/exb001 – it’s a short, invaluable book whose premise is essentially that effort and skill building are the keys to success, not natural-born talent. This may sound like an overly basic concept, but when you read the book, you’ll become super cognizant of how much importance people place on things like apparent genius and prodigy, in intelligence and skill. As Malcolm Gladwell points out in Outliers, we love to believe that some people just “have it” – whatever “it” is, and and we love to observe and talk about things that appear to be overnight successes. But it’s all illusory, of course. Overnight success is rare, and when it actually happens, there’s no foundation to support it, so it’s short-lived (as Jason Fried points out in Rework, which is one of my very favorite recent books). Well done, Timo. Look forward to reading more. All the best. Susan

    • Timo Kiander says:

      Susan,

Thank you for your comments! Also, thanks for the book tip :) I’ll have to check it out.

That is true – all of those who are successful had to work their way to the top. It requires persistent and consistent, hard work. But I think that if you are able to keep on working towards your goal, you will reach it.

Wow this is really interesting comments from such innovative and crazy smart people. Thank you for coming up with this list. It really helps, specially the newbies, grasp the point of online entrepreneurship. Personally, I think an important mindset in order to succeed in this business is to be patient and be consistent. Be patient in building your links and audience. Be consistent in putting up quality posts, products and advertisements. After all if you focus on the basics, the returns will surely come with it.

  16. Hi Timo,

I guess I resonate with Steve Roy the best: Truly serving others from the heart. The rest of the list is great as well and I will learn from these. But my motto has always been never think about the money in the first place, rather concentrate on service to others first and foremost. When we can do that our true passion and talents will flow.
